A 665 GHz WAVEGUIDE RECEIVER USING A TUNED 0.5μm Nb/AlOx/Nb SIS TUNNEL JUNCTION

چکیده
We report recent results on a 580-740 GHz SIS heterodyne receiver employing a tuned 0.50μm Nb/AlOx/Nb SIS tunnel junction. The receiver has been successfully installed at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory, Hawaii. Results of an untuned device in the same waveguide block were presented at the fifth International THz Conference. Since the mixer is meant to be operated near the supercodunting gap frequency of niobium (24/h ≈ 690 GHz), special has been taken to minimize the absorption loss in the rf matching network. To this effect we propose the use of a RF matching network that constitutes a hybrid between the well know ”end-loaded” stub and radial stub matching networks. We have measured uncorrected DSB receiver temperatures as low as 160K from 680to 702 GHz, 200K at 725GHz and 120K from 585-640 GHz. The uncorrected mixer noise temperature at 702 GHz is about 125K, of which 62K can be directly contributed to the front end optics loss. Mixer conversion loss at 702 GHz is 7dB, of which≈ 0.9dB is due to the absorption loss in the Nb film. This results in a corrected mixer noise temperature of 63K, ≈ 1.7 times the quantum noise limit.

SUBMILLIMETER SIS MIXERS USING HIGH CURRENT DENSITY Nb/AlN/Nb TUNNEL JUNCTIONS AND NbTiN FILMS
We are currently exploring ways to improve the performance of SIS mixers above 700 GHz. One approach is to use NbTiN in place of Nb for all or some of the mixer circuitry. With its high gap frequency and low losses demonstrated up to 800 GHz, it should be possible to fabricate an all-NbTiN SIS mixer with near quantumlimited noise performance up to 1.2 THz. Using a quasioptical twin-slot two-jun...

The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) requires low noise SIS receivers for frequencies from about 80 GHz to 950 GHz with a very large IF bandwidth (8 GHz SSB upper or lower sideband, 8 GHz DSB or 4 GHz dual sideband, upper and lower sideband). Since there will be a large number of antennas in the array (currently 64), additional requirements such as high reliability, low cost, and the produ...
متن کاملDEVELOPMENTS OF THE 810-GHz SIS RECEIVER WITH Nb-BASED JUNCTIONS
We present the experimental and astronomical results of the tunerless waveguide 810GHz SIS receiver. The Nb/AlOx/Nb junctions associated with a broadband tuning circuit, namely parallel connected twin junctions, are fabricated at Nobeyama Radio Observatory. The tuning microstrip line is made of a Nb thin lm. The lowest receiver noise temperature is 580 K (DSB) measured at 810 GHz, in which the ...
متن کاملNbTiN/SiO2/NbTiN and NbTiN/SiO2/Al tuning circuits for 1 THz waveguide SIS mixers
Waveguide SIS mixers are presented in which Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb tunnel junctions are integrated with both NbTiN/SiO2/NbTiN and NbTiN/SiO2/Al tuning circuits. The mixers with a NbTiN/SiO2/NbTiN tuning circuit yield relatively low receiver noise temperatures between 700 and 830 GHz, but their sensitivity drops significantly above ~ 850 GHz. In contrast, low-noise heterodyne mixing near 1 THz is observe...
متن کاملA 275-425 GHz Tunerless Waveguide Receiver Based on AlN-barrier SIS Technology
We report on a 275-425 GHz tunerless waveguide receiver with a 3.5-8 GHz intermediate frequency (IF). As mixing element, we employ a high-current-density Nb-AlN-Nb superconducting-insulating-superconducting (SIS) tunnel junction. Thanks to the combined use of AlN-barrier SIS technology and a broad bandwidth waveguide to thin-film microstrip transition, we are able to achieve an unprecedented 43...
